Controls Hardware Designer

Position Overview

The Controls Designer is responsible for the design, documentation, and assistance with the building of standard and customized industrial control panels for Dispensing and Automation Equipment. This position requires a strong technical ability in the fields of controls and electrical panel design and is for a motivated individual who enjoys a variety of responsibility. The ideal candidate will have a track record in engineering leadership as well as the ability to develop and implement standard engineering practices, as well as provide detailed documentation upon project completion. A drive to learn and expand skills and responsibilities is a must.

Primary Functions and Responsibilities

  • Documentation of electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and cooling systems (i.e.: schematics, ladder diagrams, etc.)
  • Provide thorough testing of machine functionality to verify schematic and labeling completeness and accuracy.
  • Work with mechanical and PLC programmers to ensure the control system will meet performance, reliability and func-tionality requirements
  • Inform customer project personnel regarding documentation and advises them on solving technical problems.
  • Work with other members of the control systems design department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology, with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced cost
  • Must have knowledge and some experience in PLC logic and programming (preferably Siemens) with the desire to learn more
  • Design controls and electrical hardware specific to customer, RAMPF, or government safety standards and project re-quirements
  • Human/machine physical interface design
  • Machine start up, testing and debugging

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Standard industrial panel designs & components
  • Wiring methods

    • Power distribution wiring
    • Communications layout
    • Voltage levels and types and their isolation

  • Software Experience:

    • EPLAN (preferred)
    • AutoCAD Electrical
    • MS Office Suite
    • Microsoft Visio

  • Basic knowledge of Programming languages (STL, Ladder, g-code, etc.)

    • o   Siemens Step 7, WinCC

  • Basic networking knowledge and application
  • Fieldbus Technologies (ex: EtherCAT, IOLink, Modbus)
  • Ethernet, Profinet
  • Profibus, CANbus
  • Machine labeling syntax of electrical wiring, components, hoses, etc. and how to document this information in the sche-matics
  • Knowledge of multi axis servo systems
  • Component sizing and wiring
  • Knowledge in process instrumentation (flow, level, pressure)
  • Interfacing and communication with devices; analog, fieldbus, etc.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • One or more of the following:

    • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
    • 2 year trade school degree as an electrician or electrical design
    • 5 years of on the job work experience in controls design, primarily focused on industrial panel design

  • Understand and able to apply IEEE, CE, UL, NFPA, etc. electrical requirements and standards to designs
  • Familiar with the application of SI units
  • Knowledge of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics and how these systems interact
  • Ability to adapt to/learn new controls technology and software
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Understanding and communicating technical details

 

Special Position Requirements

  • Requires excellent problem solving skills, with the ability to find ways to work under pressure and still make deadlines without cutting corners or endangering the integrity of the equipment and/or the employer as a whole.  
  • Willingness to participate in internal training to expand chemical background
  • Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task, taking on several projects at once.
  • Capable of reading electrical drawings in both North American and European standards
  • Requires ability to interact professionally with other departments, customers and suppliers
  • Ability to analyze problems, specify solutions and implement solutions.

 

Work Environment

  • Operation in a professional office environment as well as machine build environment
  • Expectation of an average of 50 hours per week; work in the evening or on weekends depending on project status. Suc-cess relies on dedication.
  • May be required to travel on short notice.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and work in a standing position for long periods
